This Expo Insightry report provides a snapshot of Iran’s Pharmaceutical in four sections:
Section One – Iran Macroeconomy at a Glance
- Iran’s GDP composition shifted in 2011-2022: Services surged (CAGR 4%), Agriculture held steady (2%), Industries dipped (1%), while Oil & Gas contracted (-4%)
Section Two – Pharmaceutical Figures
- In 2021, the Iranian pharmaceutical industry, with 347 industrial enterprises, 41,000 employees, and $320 million in investment, successfully produced products worth $1.8 billion and generated $940 million added value
- Added value to the production ratio of pharmaceutical industry is ~50% which is higher than Iran’s manufacturing average (30%)
- Despite the high added value compared to production and the high profitability of the productions relative to investment, the production value of this industry experienced a 26% decrease from 2011 to 2020, and its value added decreased by 14% during this period
- The number of employees and enterprises in the pharmaceutical sector in Iran saw a 50% growth from 2011 to 2020, indicating a high demand for labor in this industry
- Among the drugs consumed in the Iranian market, one percent is imported, and this one percent accounts for 13% of the drug market value, indicating a significant price difference between domestically produced and imported drugs
Section Three – Pharmaceutical Export
- Contrary to many industries where despite an increase in the volume of exports, the value of exports has decreased, in the pharmaceutical industry
- Five countries are collectively the destinations of 89% of total Iran’s pharmaceutical export value, and 90% of its volume in 2022
- Through 2021 to 2022, export value of Syria has experienced 274% growth, placing it as the most valuable destination for export, a place which belonged to Germany in 2021
- From 2018 to 2022, export value to Germany has fluctuated, while its export volume has not changed significantly
- Italy is a new destination for Iran’s pharmaceutical & medical export, its export value has increased 168 times over 2020-2022
Section Four – Pharmaceutical Top Players
- According to IMI-500 (2022 version) the six top players in pharmaceutical industry are DarouPakhsh, Hejrat, Abidi, Exir, Cosar, and Ghazi
