This Expo Insightry report provides a snapshot of Iran’s Food and Beverages in four sections:
Section One – Iran Macroeconomy at a Glance
- Iran’s GDP composition shifted in 2011-2022: Services surged (CAGR 4%), Agriculture held steady (2%), Industries dipped (1%), while Oil & Gas contracted (-4%)
Section Two – Food and Beverages Figures
- Food & Beverage industry, employs 18% of industrial labor and with a 10% share of production value, has 10% share of investment in industrial production in 2020
- With 18% of employment and 11% of the country’s industrial value added, the food and beverage industry is considered a labor intensive industry
- Although investment in different industries has decreased from 2010 to 2019 (as discussed in other reports), the investment in the Food & Beverage industry has almost increased constantly
- Among food categories, oil production with 4% of the food workforce and generates 13% of the added value in the food industry, is the sector with the highest value creation per unit of labor
Section Three – Food and Beverages Exports
- While Iran’s export volume has decreased by a 6% CAGR in 2018-2022, export value has shrunk by 15%, suggesting lower prices or selling less valuable goods
- Six countries (Iraq, Afghanistan, Türkiye, Pakistan, Russiam Turkmenistan) are collectively the destinations of ~80% of total Iran’s food and beverages export value, and 82% of its volume in 2022
- Food & beverage exports slumped after losing key markets in Iraq & Afghanistan, the two attractive markets in 2018
- While prepared food have been the main category of Iran’s food and beverage export, they experienced a 48% decrease in value from 2018 to 2022
- Iran’s export of prepared food has witnessed an unstoppable decline, while the volume of export has not changed considerably, showing decreasing value of exporting goods
- After 2018, vegetable fats & oils was almost removed from Iran’s fats & oils export basket, declined from USD 53 million in 2018 to USD 0.3 million in 2022
- Beverage exports saw a decline in both value and volume from 2019 to 2022, but a reversal of this trend occurred between 2022 and 2023
